This is kind of lame and weird, but I found out that the old BBS community I first logged into was shut down the beginning of September and I’m sad. I spent a lot (a lot) of time on there for about five years and I logged in every six months or so after that just to peek around. The glory days were definitely a long time ago–the activity slowed to a crawl around 2000–but that geeky community helped facilitate a lot of changes in me. I came out of my shell through that system, I met some really good friends*, I met the person who would ultimately introduce to me to Jim, I developed my interest in online community–which is the focus of my graduate studies.
Bye, Bye Annex. I’m sad you’re gone.
*Shoutout to Mark the Bowler who is one of the best friends I have and his fabulously wonderful and funny wife who makes it all worth while. Mark, who sent me a gift certificate to McDonalds when I told him I’d never had their apple pie. Mark, who once messengered me potato salad that I loved at work (!) when I was having a sad day. You rock! Your color is just fine! I swear!
