My first work experience was like most young girls — babysitting. It didn't last long though, I wasn't mature enough.

My first actual paycheck job was at a "gourmet" sandwich shop. The owner only hired teenagers because she liked cheap labor and to be in control. My two big memories from that job are:

1) My friend Maureen did something nasty to my step-mother's lunch when she and my dad came in one day. (I found out after it went out, and that woman totally deserved it.)

2) The owner told us that customers were complaining that we were doing the garnish on the daily soup wrong. I quit soon after that because it was a clear indication of how much of a scary control freak she was–to lie like that so we would do things exactly the way she wanted.

Answer: I never have. (Although I do have many "get off my lawn!" moments that make me realize I'm not a kid. I never got the hang of feeling like an adult though.)

iGoogle Artist Themes

Google has released artist themes for your personalized Google homepage. There are a lot of great ones, but I recommend Edward Monkton’s. Yesterday I was greeted with monkeys and this morning this is what I saw:

Which is, you know, awesome. And it has just changed to the Pig of Happiness, so he’s got the full spectrum covered.

You Walk Wrong

I have some bad news for you: You walk wrong.

Look, it’s not your fault. It’s your shoes. Shoes are bad. I don’t just mean stiletto heels, or cowboy boots, or tottering espadrilles, or any of the other fairly obvious foot-torture devices into which we wincingly jam our feet. I mean all shoes. Shoes hurt your feet. They change how you walk. In fact, your feet—your poor, tender, abused, ignored, maligned, misunderstood feet—are getting trounced in a war that’s been raging for roughly a thousand years: the battle of shoes versus feet.

Reports of my death

…are definitely not exaggerated.  I picked up a pestilence in Nebraska.  Have learned how to survive on 50% less oxygen and subsist on Sprite-like beverages.  DNR.

From the Lifehacker.com post about it:

Now you can stargaze using Google’s popular desktop mapping application Google Earth. In the latest version of Google Earth, hit the “Switch between Sky and Earth” button on the toolbar to get a map of the night sky from your current location. Several Sky layers are listed on the left-hand side, including Constellations, Backyard Astronomy, Hubble Showcase, The Moon, The Planets, User’s Guide to Galaxies and Life of a Star. The Sky layers are composed of over 1 million photographs from various scientific and academic sources.

Save the Date

Our bizarre calendar system and it’s shoddy leap year is denying us a Friday Tres de Mayo next year.  The man and I have decided we’re having a huge party when it comes around again … so party at our place in 2013 y’all!!

Wow

It’s been a long time since I posted anything here. Most of my regular posting mojo is going on over at the bliss blog. I still drop by squoogy nearly every day for my links, but there hasn’t been much to report. Things are great here, chugging along, lots of personal development, dreaded summer has arrived, praying a lot, cleaning a lot, we shaved Misha and he looks like a completely different cat. My one year anniversary of getting my graduate degree passed. That was exhilarating and a little traumatizing. Cut the crap out of my finger two days ago. I really hate blood.

So yeah. Not a whole lot to report, just thought I’d check in.

Interesting article from Yahoo on the 40th anniversary of the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Here’s the Wikipedia article.
