Archive for the 'Interesting' Category

This is mostly for me, but I thought I’d throw it out there in case any of you find it interesting. There’s this blog post on how Millennials are going to use technology to change the world, which led to MIT’s Center for Collective Intelligence.

New targeted advertising in 4 cities for MINI drivers — as a MINI owner, you can create a message to be displayed whenever you drive by one of their billboards. A little key fob with a RFID chip triggers the message when it comes within range of the billboard.

Sounds like an interesting way of reinforcing the MINI brand, especially after hearing about the build/buy process from Rita.

Here’s an interesting blurb about the philosophy of the creator of Craiglist:

Jim Buckmaster, the chief executive of Craigslist, caused lots of head-scratching Thursday as he tried to explain to a bunch of Wall Street types why his company is not interested in “monetizing” his ridiculously popular Web operation. Appearing at the UBS global media conference in New York, Mr. Buckmaster took questions from the bemused audience, which apparently could not get its collective mind around the notion that Craigslist exists to help Web users find jobs, cars, apartments and dates — and not so much to make money.

Wendy Davis of MediaPost describes the presentation as a “a culture clash of near-epic proportions.” She recounts how UBS analyst Ben Schachter wanted to know how Craigslist plans to maximize revenue. It doesn’t, Mr. Buckmaster replied (perhaps wondering how Mr. Schachter could possibly not already know this). “That definitely is not part of the equation,” he said, according to MediaPost. “It’s not part of the goal.”

Printer as social device

This is a great idea:

If my desktop printer understood the lessons of social software and Web 2.0, it wouldn’t be attached just to my computer or local network. It’d be accessible by my closest family and friends, too, regardless of where they lived. These people are my primary network, the folks for whom I’d put my neck on the line, and of course I’d let them use my paper and toner, just as I’d happily leave them with my house keys.

It’s the desktop printer meets social software meets the fax machine, but in everyday life rather than the office. The printer is no longer a printer, it’s my social letterbox.

Lies, Lies, Lies YEAH!

Some interesting myths debunked including:  uncooked rice thrown at weddings does not kill birds, chewing gum does not take 7 years to digest, you use a lot more than 10% of your brain.

[p.s.  You're welcome for getting the song from the title of the post stuck in your head.  Sucker.]

An experiment

Here’s an interesting article about shutting down drug dealing by giving people a second chance rather than the current failing system of mass arrests.

X-rays reveal Archimedes secrets

A series of hidden texts written by the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes are being revealed by US scientists.

Until now, the pages have remained obscured by paintings and texts laid down on top of the original writings.

Using a non-destructive technique known as X-ray fluorescence, the researchers are able to peer through these later additions to read the underlying text.

Pixar Women

I hadn’t really thought of this, but Pixar has not developed any features that have female main characters.

To date, there’s not a single Pixar film that has a female main character: The Incredibles comes the closest, but even there, both Helen Parr/Elastigirl and Violet are supporting characters, and it’s Bob Parr/Mr. Incredible that’s the hero. Look at the ‘poster wall’ on Pixar’s website. None of the poster designs feature a female character…even the rollover effects exclude every female character save Dory.

Escape from Texas

I have mixed feelings about this proposal.

I don’t really understand how this benefits the state. If the study shows that people are already doing just about 80mph, then all the state is doing by making it legal is decreasing their ticketing revenue. I mean, I’m sure it will make some drivers very happy, but since when has state law been about pleasing people?

On the other hand, for those traversing those highways that aren’t Texas citizens, who came blame them for wanting to get the hell in and out of there as fast as possible?

Submitted without comment

MPAA admits to unauthorized movie copying.

ON PREVIEW: Okay, so I lied. I couldn’t help myself.

Three things come to mind:

1. DOOOOOOO’OOOOOH!

2. Does this mean that they’re going to have to sue themselves?

3. What does this mean for all of the pending lawsuits, where the RIAA is suing people based on the intent of finanial gains?
