If you didn’t hate hospitals before…
This tragic story is so incredibly disturbing that I still can’t get my head around it. I guess I’m not sure how angry to be with the hospital involved until the story comes out about what really happened, but…wow.
How do you console this poor woman?

Hiccups Utter stupidity kills two
BOGOTA, Colombia (Reuters) - A Colombian man accidentally shot his nephew to death while trying to cure his hiccups by pointing a revolver at him to scare him, police in the Caribbean port city of Barranquilla said on Tuesday.
After shooting 21-year-old university student David Galvan in the neck, his uncle, Rafael Vargas, 35, was so distraught he turned the gun on himself and committed suicide, police said.

A wrong turn
So I was going through my old hard drive looking for mp3s so I could find some music to motivate me to finish up my project for finals and I found a lot of old files from the original squoogy.com journal. I shall be posting bits and pieces later on, but in the meantime I hope you’ll enjoy a conversation Mark and I had back in 2001:

Sony has gone off the deep end
Not only does the DRM software on their CD’s install malicious programs on your computer, but their End User License Agreement makes you their bitch in perpetuity.
1. If your house gets burgled, you have to delete all your music from your laptop when you get home. That’s because the EULA says that your rights to any copies terminate as soon as you no longer possess the original CD.
2. You can’t keep your music on any computers at work. The EULA only gives you the right to put copies on a “personal home computer system owned by you.”
3. If you move out of the country, you have to delete all your music. The EULA specifically forbids “export” outside the country where you reside.
4. You must install any and all updates, or else lose the music on your computer. The EULA immediately terminates if you fail to install any update. No more holding out on those hobble-ware downgrades masquerading as updates.
5. Sony-BMG can install and use backdoors in the copy protection software or media player to “enforce their rights” against you, at any time, without notice. And Sony-BMG disclaims any liability if this “self help” crashes your computer, exposes you to security risks, or any other harm.
6. The EULA says Sony-BMG will never be liable to you for more than $5.00. That’s right, no matter what happens, you can’t even get back what you paid for the CD.
7. If you file for bankruptcy, you have to delete all the music on your computer. Seriously.
8. You have no right to transfer the music on your computer, even along with the original CD.
9. Forget about using the music as a soundtrack for your latest family photo slideshow, or mash-ups, or sampling. The EULA forbids changing, altering, or make derivative works from the music on your computer.

I’m never going to Florida.
Frankly, I’m more suprised this happened in Florida before Texas. Although that’s probably just a matter of time.
MIAMI (AFP) - Welcome to Florida, but avoid arguments or thanks to a new law you run the risk of getting shot, according to an ad campaign launched by a gun-control group.
The campaign coincides with a state law that enters into effect authorizing gun owners to shoot anyone in a public area who they believe threaten their safety.
The law, supported by the National Rifle Association (NRA), was approved by the state legislature in April. Governor
Jeb Bush described it as a “good, common sense, anti-crime issue” when he signed it into law. His is a brother of US
President George W. Bush.Supporters call it the “Stand Your Ground” law, while opponents call it the “Shoot First” law.
Under the previous law gun owners had first to attempt to withdraw and avoid a confrontation, and were authorized to shoot the threatening individual inside their home or property.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!
This gave me the shivers
It’s sad when the term “Orwellian” is actually applicable.
Innocent in London
‘LONDON (Reuters): - A London underground train station was evacuated and part of a main east-west line closed in a security alert on Thursday, three weeks after suicide bombers killed 52 people on the transport network, police said. A Transport Police spokeswoman said Southwark station was closed and Jubilee Line services suspended between Waterloo and Canary Wharf in the east London business district.’
This Reuters story was written while the police were detaining me in Southwark tube station and the bomb squad was checking my rucksack. When they were through, the two explosive specialists walked out of the tube station smiling and commenting ‘nice laptop’. The officers offered apologies on behalf of the Metropolitan Police. Then they arrested me.

JIHAD ON YOUR ICE CREAM!!!
THE fast-food chain, Burger King, is withdrawing its ice-cream cones after the lid of the dessert offended a Muslim.
The man claimed the design resembled the Arabic inscription for Allah, and branded it sacrilegious, threatening a “jihad”.
The chain is being forced to spend thousands of pounds redesigning the lid with backing from The Muslim Council of Britain. It apologised and said: “The design simply represents a spinning ice-cream cone.”
The offending lid was spotted in a branch in Park Royal last week by business development manager Rashad Akhtar, 27, of High Wycombe.
He was not satisfied by the decision to withdraw the cones and has called on Muslims to boycott Burger King. He said: “This is my jihad. How can you say it is a spinning swirl? If you spin it one way to the right you are offending Muslims.”
A Muslim Council spokesman said: “We commend the sensitive and prompt action that Burger King has taken.”

New London vs. Kelo
Remember the case that had the Supreme Court giving the ok for cities to kick people out of their homes for commercial development?
New London Development is now saying that not only are they kicking people off of the land, but said people owe them back rent for staying on the land through the court battles–sometimes to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars. And to kick them in the ribs and the face while they’re down, New London is only willing to pay market price as it was five years ago, assuring that none of the relocatees will be able to buy new homes in the current market.
