Everyday beauty

After much poking and prodding, we’ve finally assembled a committee of various people from around the organization to consult with us on website matters.  Its official name is the Web Task Force, or WTF for short.

It’s the little things that keep me going …

Yesterday, Gov. Bill Ritter signed a measure into law that will allow liquor sales on Sundays. It goes into effect on July 6th, just in time for my birthday.

The law has been in place since Prohibition ended. 75 fracking years, people!

Good Times

And lo, there was much fun at the Packer’s Game.

Especially since they won on the first play of overtime! Exciting!!

The ratio of Packers to Broncos fans was about 50/50. It was awesome.

Fat Girl Clothing Swap

Announcing Colorado’s first ever Fat Girl Clothing Swap! We are collecting plus size clothes and hosting a swap so we can have a day of fat, fashion, and fabulousness.

We’re all giving a new life to our clothes in someone else’s closet and making room for fabulous new cute clothes. All proceeds will be going to FLARE! an organization that fights for the rights of fat people in the United States.

Top reasons for people to participate in The Swap:

  • We will have gift bags with surprises and tons of resources for fat girls for the first 50 shoppers.
  • You will find clothes from all your favorite stores at a tenth of the cost.
  • We have several awesome raffle prizes that will include art, books, and services.
  • You’ll be able to get rid of clothes you don’t wear to make room for fabulous new clothes that you will find at the Swap.
  • All proceeds are going to a wonderful charity that is out there fighting for the rights of fat people in the United States.
  • We will have a make-up station so you can get a beauty make-over with your new clothes.
  • For those interested, we will be taking fashion photographs of shoppers in a new outfit and we will email you the pictures.
  • It is going to be a blast! We’ll have great music, dedicated volunteers who want you to look and feel fabulous, and plenty of cute clothes for any occasion.

Jason Kottke created a wonderful post of historical news coverage he found after the NY Times joined the 21st Century and decided that paid subscription doesn’t work.  Articles he found include coverage of Custer’s last stand, Lincoln’s assisination, the sinking of the Titanic, and confirmation of Einstein’s theory of relativity.

In honor of National Talk Like a Pirate Day, I give you The Striking Viking Story Pirates

The Striking Viking Story Pirates adapt and perform stories written by kids as a way of celebrating the words and ideas of young people, to promote literacy as a vital part of early childhood education, and to preserve the spark of youthful creativity often lost in the transition to adulthood.

I like this one a lot. And this one too.

Brilliant!

Pranksters wrap Rove’s car
Wed Aug 29, 9:38 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Karl Rove, your car is ready.

White House pranksters wrapped Rove’s Jaguar in plastic wrap on the private driveway next to the West Wing. Rove’s car is easily recognizable because of its “I love Barack Obama” bumper sticker and the twin stuffed-animal eagles on the trunk. Oh, and there’s a stuffed-animal elephant on the hood.

Rove, the top White House political strategist who recently announced his resignation, left his car on the driveway while visiting Texas and traveling with President Bush. He was due back in Washington Wednesday evening.

I personally believe this is a birthday shout out to Space Kitty.

It’s 2:30 a.m. and it took me about 12 hours but I just finished reading it. Super, super, super, super awesomely awesome. I don’t think I will be able to watch the movie when it comes out. The book was just too good.

I’m going to see if I can sleep now although it’s probably going to take a while.

This is an awesome new feature from Google Maps:

As you drag your new destination point, the route changes on the fly to give you an idea of how your new point will change your route. It’s always been a little annoying—especially when you want to send a map to another person—when you know the default directions don’t highlight the best route, so this excellent and easy-to-use feature will certainly come in useful. To undo your changes, just right-click the new destination point and select “Remove this destination.”

Found this Yoo Toobe clip adding a live-action flair to an Eddie Izzard bit about Darth Vader in the Death Star’s canteen.

Please to enjoy!

Oh yes!

When it comes to vacation, Netflix has a simple policy: take as much as you’d like. Just make sure your work is done.  Employees at the online movie retailer often leave for three, four, even five weeks at a time and never clock in or out. Vacation limits and face-time requirements, says Netflix Chief Executive Reed Hastings, are “a relic of the industrial age.”

“The worst thing is for a manager to come in and tell me: `Let’s give Susie a huge raise because she’s always in the office.’ What do I care? I want managers to come to me and say: `Let’s give a really big raise to Sally because she’s getting a lot done’ - not because she’s chained to her desk.”
