*except not. Why can’t fall start in July??

The man and I finally caved to the brutal heat of Denver summers* yesterday and bought a portable a/c for the bedroom. It had to be portable because our HOA doesn’t allow window units (the fuck??) and central air wasn’t an option.
I was ever so grateful we did upon looking at forecast fox when I fired up my browser this morning:

Did they really have to put the flaming thermometer on there? That just makes it worse.
*A word to anyone who hasn’t been through summer in Denver and has an impression that it’s temperate here: it’s not. It’s freakin’ hot. There are a lot of places here without a/c, don’t get one! Don’t believe anyone who tells you it isn’t surface of the sun hot here. We were deceived because when we flew out here July three years ago to look at places to rent, it was raining and in the 60’s for the entire trip. That rarely happens. It’s Africa hot here. Now you’ve been warned.

So yesterday it was 65 degrees. We watched the evening news and they said, “It will start raining in the afternoon and we might get some flurries later in the evening.”
As of this morning we had about 6″ of snow with an additional 3-8″ possible and it’s in the 20’s. By Sunday it’s supposed to be in the mid 60’s again. So I guess it’s chili tonight and bbq this weekend!

Snowflakes as large as frisbees?

I guess we’re having a white Christmas. It started snowing about four and a half hours ago and we’ve got about six inches … and the heaviest part of the snow storm hasn’t hit us yet. The anchor on the news just said the storm has slowed down and we’re going to get 2 feet by tomorrow morning.
Update:
Southern Denver Suburbs (i.e. where we live) could get as much as three feet. Rita is supposed to fly in tomorrow night, so everyone keep their fingers crossed. We’re thinking it should be ok because she’s not supposed to get here until 10 p.m. and inbound flights are easier than outbound.
Update 2:
Some Flickr pictures from around our house.
Update 3:
Well, all inbound flights on Frontier have been canceled for tomorrow which means we won’t be picking Rita up tomorrow. We’re on hold with Frontier right now (only 45 more minutes to go!) and hopefully we can reschedule for some time this weekend. Keep your fingers crossed for us!!
Update 4 12/21/06, 10:50 a.m.:
Here are the pictures I took a few minutes ago… about 28 hours after it started snowing. And it hasn’t stopped yet. Rita is coming, but she’s flying in on Christmas day and leaving on the 30th. We were lucky enough to get her direct flights both ways. It took an hour and a half of listening to “all lines are busy, please try again later” and then an hour and ten minutes on hold before we even got to talk to someone. Those poor people! I have to say that the woman Jim T talked to was wonderful and did everything she could to make sure it worked out for us. The latest reports say that the airport will be closed until noon on Friday. Those pictures I posted just do not convey the amount of snow that’s out there right now. I’m having a hard time parsing what I’m seeing myself. I’m glad we went shopping for food before the storm hit!
